Tip #1:
Fake start to spring/winter: If you are new to Colorado, you will quickly find that Colorado likes to play tricks on you and will consistently snow during the spring and fall, but then will quickly become warm again. Be careful not to plant or winterize too early!
Tip #2:
During cold snaps in the spring and fall, be sure to cover your back-flow preventer so that it does not freeze or crack. Also covering your plants can help them from being shocked by a sudden freeze.
Tip #3:
Colorado's intense heat can put a strain on your lawn. On most newer controllers you can easily adjust your runtimes on all stations with "Seasonal Adjust". Up the percentage, 15-20%, and your lawn will thank you! During the springtime, you may not have to water at 100%.
Tip #4:
Colorado is known to have a lot of clay in its soil, hence the name "Colorado Clay". If you have a steep slope try to run that zone in shorter increments which will allow the water to soak into the harder soil and not runoff under the sod and collect in a low spot.
Tip #5:
Just as the amount of water that you put on your lawn is important, it is equally important for you to nourish your lawn with fertilizer and also allow it to breathe via aerating your lawn at least once a year. In order to have green grass, you must feed it as well as give it water!
